WASHINGTON–President Clinton announced during last night’s State
of the Union address that he has asked the Concord Coalition and the
American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) to co-host a series of
bipartisan conferences with the White House on the future of Social
Security. President Clinton and Vice President Gore are expected to
participate in the conferences, which will take place this year throughout
the country.

"The principal objective of this process is to raise a fair,
balanced debate about the challenges we face in preparing the Social
Security system for the retirement of the largest generation in American
history," said Concord Executive Director Martha Phillips. "We welcome the
opportunity to co-host these conferences, and hope they will bring
together
Americans from diverse generations, economic situations, geographic
locations and political affiliations to discuss this important issue."

The Concord Coalition was founded in 1992 by the late Sen. Paul
Tsongas (D-Mass.), former Sen. Warren Rudman (R-N.H.), and former
Secretary of Commerce Pete Peterson. Former Senator Sam Nunn (D-Ga.)
joined Sen. Rudman as Co-Chairman in April of 1997. The Concord Coalition is a
non-profit, public education organization. Nearly 200,000 citizens
nationwide have joined Concord’s movement for a strong economic future for
all generations.
