Forum at University of South Florida Next Monday Will Focus on Reducing Federal Deficits, Promoting Economic Growth

TAMPA, FLA.  Four experts on the federal budget will discuss solutions to the nation’s growing debt and related fiscal challenges at a public forum next Monday night, Sept. 29, at the University of South Florida.

 

TAMPA, FLA.  Four experts on the federal budget will discuss solutions to the nation’s growing debt and related fiscal challenges at a public forum next Monday night, Sept. 29, at the University of South Florida.

The panelists will be former Rep. Jim Davis; former Sen. George LeMieux; Marc Goldwein, senior policy director at the Committee For a Responsible Federal Budget, and Robert Bixby, executive director of The Concord Coalition. Chase Hagaman, a regional director for Concord, will moderate.

The University of South Florida is hosting the program, entitled “Reducing the Deficit and Investing in the Future: Can We Do Both?” The co-sponsors are The Concord Coalition and The Campaign to Fix the Debt, non-partisan organizations that work to educate policymakers and the public on the consequences of rising federal debt and advocate for a more sustainable fiscal path.

The discussion will include entitlement program reforms, the caps on other domestic and defense spending, the recent slowdown in health care spending, promoting economic growth, and the significant changes needed to improve the tax code.

The panelists will also discuss the importance of bipartisan cooperation and the need to simultaneously address short-term economic concerns and longer-term fiscal challenges. For more background on these challenges, please visit fixthedebt.org and concordcoalition.org.

PANELISTS:

Jim Davis (D-Fla.) served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1997 to 2007, and was a member of the Budget Committee. He is a member of Holland & Knight’s Public Policy & Regulation Group. Davis also served in the Florida House of Representatives from 1988 to 1996, and was the majority leader in 1995 and 1996.  

George LeMieux (R-Fla.) served as Florida’s 34th senator in the 111th Congress, where he was a member of  the Special Committee on Aging. LeMieux previously served as Florida’s deputy attorney general and as the governor’s chief of staff, overseeing all state agencies. He is currently chairman of the board of the Gunster law firm.

Marc Goldwein is the senior policy director of the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, where he guides and conducts research on a wide array of topics on fiscal policy. He previously served as associate director of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform (the Simpson-Bowles Commission).

Robert L. Bixby is executive director of The Concord Coalition and speaks around the country on the nation’s fiscal challenges and possible solutions to them. He served on the Bipartisan Policy Committee’s Debt Reduction Task Force (the Domenici-Rivlin Task Force). He has testified at congressional hearings — most recently on budget process reform — and been interviewed by news organizations around the country.
