DURHAM AND CONCORD, N.H. -- The University of New Hampshire’s Whittemore School of Business and Economics and School of Law, in partnership with the Concord Coalition, announce today the creation of Next Generation Matters, a series of presidential candidate conversations with students about the economy, the federal deficit, and the environment.  These events will be held in Durham and Concord over the next coming months as New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation presidential primary takes center stage.

WASHINGTON – The Concord Coalition said today that a new ad campaign by AARP is misleading, divisive and an abdication of responsible leadership. At a critical moment, when hard decisions must be made about our nation’s future, AARP is demanding that current and future benefits for seniors be maintained at the expense of all other national priorities. It is interest group politics at its worst and should be soundly rejected. 

WASHINGTON -- The Concord Coalition today said that updated budget projections by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) demonstrate a potential path for bringing spending and revenues closer together over the next 10 years. But the projections also underscore the need for the new congressional “super committee” to focus on the difficult decisions and bipartisan compromises necessary to put the country on a more responsible long-term course.

WASHINGTON -- Former members of Congress who serve on The Concord Coalition’s Board of Directors today urged elected officials to raise the debt limit and embrace the broad deficit-reduction plan released this week by the Senate’s bipartisan “Gang of Six.”

WASHINGTON -- As Congress considers a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution, The Concord Coalition said today that any such proposal should be thought of as a bold statement of principle: that one generation of Americans should not bind future generations with crushing debt.

The amendment being considered this week, however, is something different. By including an arbitrary limit on spending -- 18 percent of GDP -- while also enshrining a super-majority requirement for tax increases, this proposal departs from the broad principle of budget balance.

While there is still a big gap in specificity on the policies necessary to achieve a stable fiscal path, hopefully the negotiators can build on the Senate’s current good faith effort to devise a balanced legislative package.
