GOP Budget Hawks Lay Low as Party Pushes Tax Plan that Experts Say Will Send Deficit Soaring

WASHINGTON — Dallas Rep. Jeb Hensarling is a deficit hawk who has long bemoaned the "fiscal insanity" of a national debt that's now above $20 trillion.

The Republican displays a real-time national debt clock in the hearing room of his House Financial Services Committee. He even voted last month against a Hurricane Harvey relief package because it was tied to an increase in the federal debt ceiling.

"It's shocking how explicit it is, to hear Republicans openly promoting deficits," said Robert Bixby, executive director of the Concord Coalition, a nonpartisan fiscal watchdog.
