MABishopCON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) - A Georgia congressman led midstate leaders in a mock legislative session Wednesday, showing them just how hard it is to balance the federal budget.

Dozens of local leaders and citizens turned out for the event,  held by Congressman Sanford Bishop at Vineville Academy in Macon. Among them, State Senator David Lucas, Macon City Councilwoman Elaine Lucas, and Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones.

They split up in groups and had to review the current budget, come up with ideas on how to reduce the deficit, and then talk weigh all the political pros and cons of each decision.

Bishop says the activity is a great way to get the public involved in policymaking and reducing the deficit.

"It will inform the participants who I believe will come advocates who will then reach out to their legislators and members of Congress, to the Executive Branch--the President, and urge them in the strongest possible way to do the responsible thing," the congressman told 41NBC.

Wednesday's fiscal workshop was also made possible by Concord Coalition -- a bipartisan group dedicated to educating public officials and citizens about the federal deficit.
