Date and Time:
Sunday, October 30, 2011 - 9:15am - 11:15am
At Senator Kirk's 4th Annual Model Congress, high school attendees will be participating in an interactive budget exercise where they are tasked with making hard choices that can reduce the 10-year deficit and work toward a more balanced budget. Participants will review and discuss public policy options that both reduce spending and raise revenue, and consider the areas of general government and discretionary spending, defense and homeland security, taxes and entitlements. The Concord Coalition will conduct two separate sessions from 9:15-10:15 a.m. and 10:15-11:15 a.m.
In addition to participating in the Debt Busters exercise, students will participate in mock committee hearings, floor debate, and caucus meetings. Senator Kirk and congressional staff will be on hand to guide these realistic proceedings.
About Principles and Priorities Events:
Principles & Priorities is our flagship exercise that has been used in hundreds of High Schools, Colleges and Universities across the country. In it, participants make decisions about the best combination of program spending and tax policies to match with their larger sense of what the principles behind our budgets should be and what priorities the government should place at the forefront of fiscal decision-making.
